Infusing Innovation in the Curriculum

Infusing InnovationWhen commenting on the increase in attendance and the involvement of the RIT community in Imagine RIT, President Bill Destler has said, “We have accomplished in two years what I thought would take five.” With over 2,000 students, faculty and staff participating as exhibitors in 2009 (more than doubling the participation from the inaugural event) we are certainly making progress toward establishing RIT as a university known for its creativity and innovation.

The total number of exhibits stayed about the same from the first year to the second, but I believe one of the greatest differences is that more faculty members incorporated creating something to exhibit at Imagine RIT into their courses. I hope this is a trend that will continue.

Of course, RIT students doing innovative and creative work isn’t new, but a number of faculty have told me that their students get excited about and raise the quality of their work when they know that they will have the chance to showcase their efforts to upwards of 30,000 people. I’d love to hear from any faculty members that have modified their course to include creating a project where students display their work during Imagine RIT.
